NOVACoastLAB develops cutting-edge research in coastal environment and community sustainability, climate change, coastal cities sustainability, and active community engagement and coconstruction of coastal management knowledge. The team, with extensive experience in multidisciplinary research, directs its activities to respond to society’s problems and challenges, through the implementation and of participatory processes that mobilize multi-stakeholders in collaborative contexts. In this way, it contributes to the construction of new forms of governance in public policies, in areas such as risk management, coastal biodiversity, nature-based solutions, ecosystems-based management, marine spatial planning and resilient and active coastal community engagement.
NOVACoastLAB’s activity is structured in three major research areas: Assessment and Management Risk and Civil Protection; Green and Blue Infrastructures and coastal Urban Sustainability; and Governance, Active Citizenship and Social Laboratories.

- Development of assessment methodologies for coastal hazards, vulnerabilities and risks such as erosion and overtopping;
- Creation of risk and emergency management plans in coastal urban areas, adaptation strategies to climate change and plans and strategies for adaptation and civil protection;
- Development of innovative methodologies for the definition and implementation of green infrastructures in vulnerable and urban areas;
- Innovative techniques of participation, and co-building of consensus and multi-stakeholder mediation in processes of collaboration and empowerment, critical reflection and training
