Description:

waste@NOVA aims to understand and know material flows and their change inside society, to reduce waste, promote recycling, minimize environmental impact, and rationally plan waste management infrastructures. The purpose of our research focuses on the development of waste/resources management systems with practical, technical, and systematic perspectives with systems analysis approach, using socio-economic methods. This sustainable waste/resources management, which includes technical, environmental, economic, and social factors, allows us to solve the practical problems that municipal associations, management entities or businesses may have.
Our research is divided in three main areas:

  • Materials cycle planning – promotion of waste management strategies, sustainable waste management and waste hierarchy, applying methodologies like life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, cost benefit analysis and multicriteria decision making.
  • Waste/resources management – development of methodologies to improve materials management, like performance indicators for waste collection, studies on packaging waste collection, urban waste management systems improvements.
  • Environmental risk management and environmental conservation – understanding aquatic contamination by dumpsites and plastics in terrestrial, aquatic and marine environments, and implementation of projects on landfill mining and bioreactors, soil remediation, odours and biogas monitoring and nitrogen balance in waste treatments.
